A science fair project is all about exploring a specific topic in science. The quality of a science fair project often depends on the topic that was originally selected by the student. If you have been assigned a science fair project to complete this year then you will want to start your assignment by first selecting a topic that has potential to create an amazing and winning science fair project.

What Are You Interested In?

The first way to select a topic for your science fair project is to think about what you are interested in. For example, if you are in to soccer then you can use soccer as your topic for your project. On the other hand, if you are more interested in computer programming, then your topic will be computer programming. To help you come up with a topic you can create a list of the things you like to do or the products that you like to use.

What Questions Would You Like to Answer?

Another approach to finding a topic for your science fair project is to think about the questions that you have about science or your world that you would like to answer. For example, you may be interested in learning why the sky is blue or why gravity pulls things towards the earth. Again creating a list of questions is a good place to start your topic search.

What Fields of Science Are You Interested In?

If you are interested in a specific field of science then you can search for a topic within that field. To do this you will need to conduct a topic search either online or in your library. You will use keywords to search for topics related to your field of interest. For example, if you are interested in microbiology then you can use keywords like “microbiology topics” or “microbiology research.” These keywords will help you to find articles and lists of topics that you can use for your project.

What Is in the Media?

The media is a great source for topics for science fair projects. You can find topics by looking at what science issues are making the news. Science blogs, science journals and even local newspapers are all great places to find newsworthy science topics.

What Topics Have Been Used in the Past?

The final source of topics for your science fair project is to examine what topics have been used in the past to create projects. While you cannot copy these projects, you can expand upon the topic or modify the project to create a unique project idea.

Science Projects For Summer Fun

Science projects aren’t usually thought of as a summer activity, but think again. Summer is a terrific time to let your kids have a great time exploring the fascinating world of science. Here are four reasons to add some science fun to lazy summer days.

1. Warm weather means you can do those messy projects outside! Whether you’re working with a bottle rocket or foaming baking soda, science projects can be messy. Summer gives you the perfect chance to take those drips, spills and splatters outside. Cleanup is easy with a garden hose – and any stubborn stains will fade in the sun.

2. You have time to do the LONG projects. Often, there is a limited amount of time between the time a science project is assigned and the time of the science fair. In the summer, you have a lot of time. You can do time lapse photography on plants.

Or you can study how soil erodes over a month of thunderstorms. If a project doesn’t work the first go round, summer also offers a chance for a do over.

3. Kids have the chance to do in depth study. With all the other schoolwork and activities that happen during the school year, kids don’t have the opportunity to really explore the subject of their science project. Summer science can include doing variations of the same experiment, reading novels relating to the topic, or taking field trips that will help bring the project to life.

4. Projects done in the summer can be saved for the school year. Avoid the last minute crunch for time by doing the science project during the summer. Keep good records, take pictures and video, and save file the science project so you won’t lose it.

Then, when science project time rolls around, you’ll just have to add the report!
